Menjangan island: Bali's best kept secret

Menjangan island: Bali's best kept secret

If you’re looking for a unique slice of paradise in Bali, where the water is crystal clear, untouched coral reefs, significantly less tourists and wild (rein)deer that greet you on the beach… keep reading. The island I’m about to introduce to you is still some sort of hidden gem, far away from the hustle and bustle from the busy tourist areas. No, i’m not talking about the Gili islands or the Nusa islands. I’m talking about Menjangan island.

Fun fact: Did you know that "Menjangan" means deer? That's right! And it's not just a cute name—the island is actually home to wild deer, so don’t be surprised to see some unique Javan deer when you’re chilling on the beach 🙂 It’s the perfect spot for people who love wildlife and marine life and it’s a dream for divers and snorkelers!

It's the kind of place where time slows down, and every moment feels like a blissful escape. So, if you're up for an adventure that's off the beaten path, Menjangan Island is where it's at!

WHERE IS MENJANGAN ISLAND

Menjangan island is tucked away in the northwest corner of Bali and is a part of the West Bali National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s close to Pemuteran, another unspoiled area in Bali - which I highly recommend visiting. It’s a big drive from places like Ubud, Canggu and Seminyak ( from Ubud for example it will be 3 to 4 hours) but very worth it! But If you’re staying for example in Lovina, you’re already much closer and the drive will be less far.

HOW TO GET TO MENJANGAN ISLAND

Menjangan Island is actually accessible quite easily from West Bali National Park. The easiest and the most convenient way to reach Menjangan island is by taking a boat from Labuhan Lalang, a port located near Pemuteran beach. It takes 30 minutes to reach the island by boat.

  • Cost of the Park Guide –> depends on the park guide

  • Cost of the Permit – IDR 200.000 on weekday, IDR 300.000 on weekend. (Note: The prices may vary/change)

WHERE TO STAY ON MENJANGAN ISLAND

First, it’s important to understand that going to Menjangan island is a day-trip, as it’s not allowed to stay overnight on the island (head to mainland Bali for that). You’ll need to book a hotel in Bali.

These are some good hotel options near Menjangan island:

THINGS TO DO ON MENJANGAN ISLAND

  • SNORKLE AND DIVE: Since the island remained uninhabited for a significant period, its coral reefs have remained pristine and breathtaking. What's even better? Menjangan Island boasts gentle currents and less congested dive spots, making it one of Bali's premier diving destinations. You'll find numerous snorkeling and diving day tours available from various operators based at Labuhan Lalang. In the waters around Menjangan Island, you'll find everything from pygmy seahorses and garden eels to reef sharks and clownfish.

  • RELAX ON THE STUNNING BEACHES: as I mentionned before, you might run into some deer. But don’t worry, they are friendly and it is perfectly safe to approach them — just do not harm them or leave any harmful trash behind you when you leave the beach.

  • VISIT VARIOUS TEMPLES: for example the Pura Gili Kencana temple, which is Menjangan Island's signature monument and an absolute must-see on your visit. The best view of this temple is from the water, where you can fully appreciate the Ganesha statue in its full glory.

  • EXPLORE A PART OF WEST BALI NATIONAL PARK : Spread across a whopping 19,000 hectares, the West Bali National Park is a nature lover's dreamland, brimming with an incredible variety of plants and animals. Menjangan Island, though only a tiny slice of this vast park. You can embark on a morning expedition through the park with a guide and still have oodles of time left for more fun-filled escapades. You can take a leisurely stroll around the entire island in just about 1 hour and 15 minutes!

IMPORTANT TIPS

  • There are no commercial restaurants or cafes on the island, so it’s a good idea to bring some snacks and water with you. Some tour packages might include meals, so check with your operator beforehand.

  • Menjangan Island is a conservation area and does not have resorts or hotels. So you’ll have to book a hotel in the Pemuteran area or north Bali.

  • MAKE SURE TO BRING CASH because in the Permuteran area are very few to NO atms!!!!
